This Technology Rocks!

Hey Class,

Now that the Olympic flame has burned out, the cheering has ceased, and the Gold run ended, it is interesting to look back on the Olympics and observe what made it such an awe inspiring display of athletic ability. What allowed the Olympic athletes to excel to such a level? was it :the wild crowds, the support of Canadians everywhere, the countless hours spent training? We can not forget about the technology involved.

In order to level the playing field and provide a fair arena for sport, the Olympics utilized many unique technical officiating devices. In particular curling used a new system: "Eye on the Hog".

Don't be fooled by the seemingly low level of technology in Curling. Although it looks like curling could be "swept" away by most other sports, curling ROCKS. This technology removes the need for a human official watching the hog line. The hog line is the line which the curler must release the rock before crossing. The circuitry in the handle interacts with a metallic strip in the ice.If the throw is invalid, red lights will flash, if it is good, green lights will flash.

Why is this technology important? Well if it weren't for this technology, we may have not Won GOLD and SILVER in Men's and Women's curling respectively due to the human error of a judge. Without that one gold we would have just tied the gold medal winter Olympic total record instead of what we actually did: beat it!

I've Been a Miner for a Heart of Gold....

I hope everyone has been staying fresh over this past month,

Let us not dwell on how long it has been since my last post, but on how awesome the blog will be in the future!! My apologies to my loyal readers, associated press, and random surfers. It has been a busy month, but nothing should excuse my absenteeism from the blogging world. On a lighter note, alot has been going on in the World lately, such as......the OLYMPICS. I, like millions of other patriotic Canadians tuned into the Olympic broadcast religiously. It has been an enthralling last few weeks, filled with proud performances, memorable moments, and most importantly a unified Canada! You didn't have to look far to see the impact of the Games. From Olympic mitts, flying flags, watching tv with friends, or even driving across the nation! The games were accessible to everyone, everywhere, to some degree! The games opened with a blast (Alex Bilodeau- Gold- Men's Moguls) and ended with a shot that will last (Mens Hockey- Gold).

I have heard alot of debate over "Own the Podium". Canada may not have reached its' medal prediction, but the overall performance including numerous top 10 finishes was astounding. 14 Golds, setting an Winter Olympic record, is not too shabby at all. Canada desplayed grit and determination in every event I watched, especially Joannie Rochette in figure skating who placed 3rd after the tragic death of her Mother and Devon Kershaw in the 50km x-country who came 5th by the length of a ski! I may not be a sports analyst but Own the Podium did something right.

My personal favorite performance: Jon Montgomery in Men's Skeleton-----> "what is yours?"

Comment!

Now Buckle up, because here comes a Photo Roller Coaster, I call it: "Olympic Fever- Get SICK"

I may not have an Olympic Gold, but I have a Gold phone, and took these pics for all of you!! The Olympic High Five with Fancouver, it was a huge success! They made it all the way too!

Junior World Athlete: Paddy Vaughn. Hitting some deep Squats at the "dumb BELL" gym.

Best Rideau Canal Conditions of the year!

Famous Canadian Olympians under the Bronson Bridge: Next entrants: Bilodeau and Crosby

"Oh the good old hockey game..."

....it's the best game you can play."
Trip to Tremblant! Totally Pitted!!

Holding the Olmpic Flame! But wait. it gets better....

Delaire Nicholson: Training for Florida at the Glebe's Elite Fitness Centre "for people who want to paddle good and do other things good too."

Kevin O'Neill is now Ranked 7th in Canada! Running a new PB of 8.37! Nationals are coming up and word on the track is: Kevin is getting faster, can he break the provincial record? tune in...

After watching the Men's Gold game at Don Cherry's, devote fans Ben, Peter, Mark, Gab, and Colin hit Downtown Ottawa by storm along with thousands of other wild fans. Who knew a Tacoma could fit so many people......epic

Peter "longest hockey stick of all time" Dehaan!

Mark "Crazzy Co-pilot" Oldershaw!

Gab "Fist pumpin" Beauchesne-Sevigny!

Thousands of people! and they all wanted to high five! The Tacoma's horn also ran out of juice...

And we made the paper! (notice: Ben Hayward's new Hair cut!)

So that is February in a nut shell. Or should I say bomb shell because it was so explosive! If you couldn't be bangin' on the boards for that Gold medal game, I'd say downtown Ottawa was the place to be! You could breath the Olympic spirit and it felt great! It didn't matter who you were or where you were from, everyone was CANADIAN Sunday Night!

So Stay Fresh,

Colin

P.S. Watch out young elementary students because my sister Maureen has a license to teach! Maureen graduated from X, then from University of Fort Kent where she ran X country, and now she's entering a new adventure! If she is as great of a teacher as sister, I'm sure she will work wonders! Props Maureen, for real!

Olympic Glove and Brotherly Love

Hey Everyone long time no blog,

So lots has happened since the last post! School is getting pretty busy, the recent rain has made skating conditions bad, got to chill with Ian "Good Call" Miller on Saturday including a great time at Zaphods with other friends, too bad we missed the band!, and I touched the Olympic rings this morning!

It seemed like any other day this morning. I had breakfast. I packed my bag. I brought some gear to hit the track for a workout inspired by my brother's performance last weekend (I'll talk about that later on). I was all set to go when I opened the door and there in front of me was a care package. For some reason I don't get care packages very often.....so it's an awesome surprise when I do. I opened it immediately. Words can not express the feeling I had when I opened that box. It was as though some giant had picked up Vancouver and poured magical Olympic dust on it, folded it up, and sent it to my house. You may have guessed what was in the box. You're right, OLYMPIC MITTS. When putting them on it felt as though my hands were in the Olympic flame. Thanks Mom and Dad!

If you think olympic mitts are exciting, check out Brian and Dennis Stever's blog about their epic quest which will take them across Canada to see Vancouver 2010! Check it! : http://fancouver2010.blogspot.com/ We are arranging to have an Olympic high five when they reach Ottawa (knock on wood) with our Mitts. By the way, this blog post as been brought to you by the letter A, for: http://angusmortimer.com/ . check em!

On to the Bromance. My bro, Kevin ran really quickly last weekend at the 2010 Can-Am Track and Field Classic. Kevin currently runs for the Western Mustangs, he is also Captain of the team. He sometimes competes in the Decathlon because he can run fast, jump over big objects, and throw various implements far. Kev placed third at this event in the Men's 60m hurdles, running 8.59, a personal best, and the best thing is he can go even faster. For the record, that is the 2nd fastest ever run Nova Scotia 60m hurdle time, our stompin grounds. You da man Kev!

That's it and thats all.

Stay Fresh,

Colin

Around the World!

It's been forever since my last post,

A couple of weekends ago, a couple friends and I went and saw a Daft Punk Tribute band at Ritual Night Club! it was sick. It was a 10-piece finger lickin great group. From synth to trumpets they had it all, oh and vocals too. As you would expect they sounded just like the real deal. They played all the big hits. The dance floor was bumpin but it was also great to just listen to their jams. I really enjoyed the two trumpets on stage, they were so in sync it blew my mind. I favour the trumpets because I used to play trumpet, and not to "tute" my own horn, was pretty good.

I don't go to many concerts. I've seen a couple huge names such as The Stones, Paul McCartney, Matte Mayes, and Plaskett (shoutout to Dartmouth, Darkside!). This concert wasn't so much about the experience, it was all about the music. I wouldn't want their autographs but I would definitely buy their CD. So my point is, if you get a chance to see this tribute band, which is based out of T-Dot, DO IT. It was cheap too ($12 a ticket). On to a different genre, if you haven't already heard Joel Plaskett's latest album "Three", check it out and buy that too.

Another shoutout is in order, Thanks to Katie Mortimer who invited me to the show, otherwise I probably wouldn't have gone.

Stay Fresh,

Colin

2400 Blog

As part of an information systems assignment, we were required to create a blog. That is why it is currently named 2400ColinO'Neill.

Instead of creating a blog and never using it, I think it will be awesome to keep it updated with awesome events and general information!

For example, hockey last night took a lot out of me and I failed to wake up this morning and do a "pyramid" workout with a great group of paddlers. If anyone is thinking about hitting Gatineau park for some x-country skiing, it sounds perfect in terms of weather and really fast conditions. This info came from a room mate of mine,Ben Hayward (check out his site:benhayward.ca ). This past week Ben received "Whitewater Paddler of the Year" at the Ottawa sports award, congratulations Ben. Also in other paddling news, Ian Mortimer won "Ottawa Athlete of the Year", just about as big as it gets!Check out his site along with other canoers at: http://canoe4canada.com/

Fresh Glass

Just got off the ice after some great puck. Rob, Pete, Angus, and I made some great cuts and dangles. I'm not used to blogging.....but I'll give it a try. Probably lost about 10 pounds no big deal, I'll get it back soon. Keep your eyes out for this little tike, dressed in all black, helmet with cage- next Crosby, very early #1 draft pick in 2020. Final score was 75-63......

Alright, that's it for now. Check back soon for some more, sweet, sweet updates on my life.

Oh, and Stay Fresh,

Colin
